Boy Scout Eagle Scout projects help benefit and beautify the community, but 15-year-old Austin Secor is hoping his project will the change lives of needy children.
Secor, a Broomfield resident and member of local Troop 337, and his family have provided foster care to dozens of children in the area. He has a passion for helping foster children, which is how he came up with the idea for his Eagle project.
Secor is hoping to bring the joy of music to foster children and also give them something they can call their own. Secor is collecting donated musical instruments to recondition and give to foster children.
“Foster children have very little to call their own. You can’t imagine how wonderful they would feel to be given something that would actually be only theirs. Something they could carry with them and care for,” he said. “I thought a musical instrument would be a wonderful gift because, not only would they be able to learn a skill, they would actually have something to call their own. A foster child would beam with pride to receive a gift like this. And music should be an option for every child.”
Secor is seeking musical instrument donations from the community and will have donation bins at Lamar’s Donut locations in Colorado throughout April. Those who would like to donate can email Secor at musiceagleproject@gmail.com. Anyone who donates an instrument will be invited to meet the child who will benefit from the donation. Secor hopes to change the lives of at least 20 foster children.
