Troop 337 Historian Report – April 2025

April 1st – Troop Meeting [Structures, Part 2]

Scouts continued working on structures with ropes, lashings, and poles.  Scouts re- created the contraptions from last meeting to the best of their ability. After the contraptions were assembled, they were judged on their accuracy to the pictures they were shown of the structures built at the first meeting. Next, the meeting focused on Dutch oven dishes.  Each PLC member had a table where Scouts could walk over and hear an explanation of how to make the dishes and why Scouts should make them at the next campout. All throughout the meeting, Dexter was cooking Dutch oven desserts, which were handed out at the end.

April 8th – New Scout Parent Meeting and Troop Meeting

We held a New Scout parent meeting to go over items such as required camping gear and how we organize our monthly campouts, summer camp, required paperwork, and general Q&A.  The Scouts also did meal and patrol planning for the New Scout Campout.

April 11th – 13th – New Scout Campout – Horsetooth Reservoir

Our Troop held our annual New Scout Campout at Horsetooth Reservoir. It was not excessively cold this time! In fact, it was burning hot on Saturday. A few Scouts went on an organized hike around Mount Horsetooth to complete requirements for the Camping Merit Badge, and in the afternoon the Scouts went on a hike around the area.  Harrison organized a campfire program with skits, jokes, and songs.  It was a lot of fun; great job, Harrison!

April 22nd – Troop Meeting

– We held a summer camp parent meeting directly after flags.

This week’s meeting was primarily meal planning for the May campout at Lake Wellington as well as a patrol briefing on proper planning for meal planning and shopping. The rest of the meeting was a seminar on how to properly prepare for certain weather conditions on campouts and why preparing for these is important.

April 26th – Kohl Street Clean-Up Service Project

It was about time to clean up Kohl Street, the adopted street Troop 337 is responsible for keeping clean and cared for. We made sure we continue to support our commitment to the city. We met at the southwest corner of Kohl & Miramonte at 8:50 on Saturday, April 26. We finished around 11:00.  We walked more than 3.5 miles and got the area clean.

April 29th – Mandatory Annual Swim Test (no regular Troop meeting).

7:30 PM

Broomfield Community Center, 280 Spader Way, Broomfield, CO 80020

Each year Scouts and leaders must participate in a mandatory annual BSA swim test if they wish to work on water-based Merit Badges, go swimming at summer camp or Troop campouts, or participate in any Troop water-based activities such as canoeing, whitewater rafting, etc.

Requirements being tested were the following:

Swimmer Level Test:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting back stroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

Beginner Level Test:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

All Scouts did a great job on their tests, and I am glad that a lot of people showed up!  Get ready for summer!
